Viewing Debug Information In-Game

Debugging web games can be a painful process. Unity's output logs can be viewed while the web player is running (in Mac OS X, this can be done through Console.app), but telling an end user to do this when trying to fix a bug is sure to only cause confusion. Fortunately the dimeRocker client offers a more convenient solution. Instead of sending your messages and errors to Unity's Debug functions, use drConsole.Log instead (drClient.Log is provided for convenience if you don't need to specify the type of message).

Unity 3 Support

As promised earlier this week, dimeRocker will support Unity 3 the day it's released. Unity Technologies announced on Wednesday that beta testers are no longer bound by an NDA, so we're able to tell you about the changes we've made in the latest drClient, an alpha version of which is available now.

dimeRocker Initialization in Unity

A useful feature introduced in version 1.3 of the Unity drClient is a custom inspector on the dimeRocker game object. This is where you enter your version ID, secret key, and other options like whether to use the dimeRocker Master Server. Additionally, there is a dropdown named Initialization Options where you can choose to load specific dimeRocker data on game start.

dimeRocker's Master Server

A lesser-known service that dimeRocker offers is our free-to-use Master Server for Unity games (if you're unfamiliar with the Master Server, see this page). This is a great alternative to using the default Master Server provided by Unity Technologies. If your project is already using dimeRocker, simply click on the dimeRocker game object and select the "Use dimeRocker Master Server" option.

Gamasutra recently posted a feature/interview with lead Social Designer Aki Jarvinen of Digital Chocolate, highlighting the need for social games to grab people early. How early? Well Jarvinen believes that if you haven’t captivated the potential user within the first 5 minutes of the game, then you’re probably not going to go too far.

Gamasutra Interviews Unity's Helgason

The release of the iPad has been a hot-topic for the last little while. Plenty of people have been falling on either side of the fence. You can see it as an over-priced and over-sized iPhone, or you’re in the camp that believes it’s a world-changing device. Either way no one can argue that the platform is doing well for itself. It seems to be attracting the attention of a lot of game developers, especially those that were working on iPhone games in the past.

Diversification is something that dimeRocker strives to achieve. That’s why our service helps to deploy games to multiple platforms, which isn’t a bad idea considering the news that Microsoft and Nokia will be jumping into the social platform on their next-gen phones.

Games are great. Social games are even better. But what about a social game with a conscience? Well, that would be just about the bestest thing ever! That’s exactly what the minds over at Armchair Revolutionary are up to. The idea was to encourage people to change the world for the better, through the games that they play. iFund Doubles Down on the Future

TechCrunch today featured a guest posting by Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, partnered with John Doerr, Bing Gordon, Chi-Hua Chien and Ellen Pao. It is a fairly short and succinct post that I would recommend for anyone that has interested in developing applications/games, or just with interested in the tech world in general.
