Gamasutra Interviews Unity's Helgason

The release of the iPad has been a hot-topic for the last little while. Plenty of people have been falling on either side of the fence. You can see it as an over-priced and over-sized iPhone, or you’re in the camp that believes it’s a world-changing device. Either way no one can argue that the platform is doing well for itself. It seems to be attracting the attention of a lot of game developers, especially those that were working on iPhone games in the past.
Gamasutra posted a brief interview with David Helgason over at Unity Technologies today about the tech of the iPhone, and Unity 1.7 which was developed to take advantage of it. For those not yet familiar with Unity 3D, the platform is one that has been used for some time for browser, iPhone, and iPod touch games. At current count there are over 600 games on the app store that were made with the tech of Unity 3D. When the iPad launched 15 Unity-authored games were posted specifically for iPad. Not to mention the fact that they were published by big companies like Warner Bros., Disney, and Chillingo.
"The goal is always to give developers the ability to create content in the most interesting places… And when the iPad was announced, we had a sense that it would probably be pretty interesting and probably pretty easy because we already support the iPhone," said Helgason during the interview with Gamasutra.
You can check out the entire interview here, but we at dimeRocker just wanted to highlight some of the success of our good friends over at Unity. It’s always great to see new platforms adopted and utilized. Unity has done a great job of working its way into a fairly static field, while quickly becoming a forerunner in tech.
